Certification Exam Process

The goal of the WaterART Certification programs is to provide the highest standard of theoretical, practical and leadership skills to become an excellent Instructor, Trainer, Specialist or Fitness Consultant. Certification Programs are divided into 2 categories:

1)     Comprehensive Certification see link

2)     Specialty Certification see link

Comprehensive Examination Certification requires that each candidate complete both a theory exam and a practical assessment to become fully Certified.

Specialty Examination Certification requires that candidates who are currently WaterART Certified, only need to complete the theory component of the exam process to renew and achieve another level of qualification. Any NEW candidate or Expired qualification's candidate will be required to complete boththe theory and practical assessment to become fully Certified. Note that if an Instructor is only Water Certified and wish to become Land Certified - they will be required to do complete a Land Practical Assessment. The same applies to Land Certified Instructors if they wish to become Water Certified will have to complete both parts of the exam process.

If a candidate has multiple Certifications, all Certifications will have the same common renewal date (which is two years from the passing date of the newest exam). When successfully completing another level of Certification before the candidates expiration date,  there will be no fee will be required and candidates will automatically be issued an electronic Certification Diplomas from the passing date of the newest qualification. If hard copies of the Certification Diploma are required (shipped) candidates will be charged shipping fees. See options.  All candidates will need to maintain their own Emergency Safety Qualifications (such as either a current Life-guard Qualification or a valid CPR/FIRST AID/AED. This is written on the Certification Diploma that the qualification is only valid when Emergency Safety Qualifications are current (as dates typically do not coincide with your WaterART Certification).Completing 5 levels of WaterART Certification to be listed as a Gold Certified and have a website page.
If you are a WP member, your discount will increase to 25% level.

Practical exams (video upload) will be assessed AFTER theory exams are successful. The exception is when the candidate has prepared for an onsite practical assessment (reviewed the materials - video's, manual and study guide materials) with the Master Trainer, at the Master Trainer’s discretion. All other candidates must submit the theory exam FIRST, and, when successful, complete the practical assessment. For those candidates who do not have computers or are technology challenged: you may request an open-book exam and submit your practical exam via video file on a USB stick at the same time as the written submission.

How to Complete the Theory Exam Process:
All Theory Examinations are completed online via our secure link.  Please request a link from our office when you are ready to take this exam a week in advance of taking the exam online at  info@waterart.org). The theory exam has 50 multiple choice questions (for 100 marks) with a lesson plan upload (100 marks). The online theory exam will need at least 2 hours to complete and submit. Candidates MUST prepare a 45-60 minute lesson plan  to be uploaded into the theory exam prior to submitting the form. Candidates will not be able to open and close the link nor resubmit the exam with the same link. In other words, candidates will have only one time to submit the theory exam. Each exam will be a randomized block of questions, unique for each candidate. Should a candidate not have internet or become very confused with multiple choice exams or technology, they may independently request our open-ended exam or an oral exam, which must be completed within 2 weeks of request.

How to Complete the Practical Assessment:
The practical exam may be completed onsite with a Certified WaterART Master Trainer OR we may email you  a link to upload your video presentation as written out in your lesson plan (MOV or  MP4 files). The practical video may be done via several file uploads; however, you will need to label each file in a proper order so that the assessor may easily follow your presentation. Lesson plans should also be uploaded with the video submission (may be the same or different to the theory upload). Assume different Master Trainers may mark teach part of the exam. The goal of the video upload is to film yourself (the instructor) so that we may both hear and see you.  You may film the program in your home (as if you are on deck) or teach from a pool, or a combination of the two.  We recommend keeping your filming very simple, with just yourself in the video, pretending to be teaching a group exercise program. The goal is to mark the instructor, so we need to be able to see, hear and understand your exercise goals and coaching tips. There is a detailed marking system and exam study guide questions and answer in the manual so please review this prior to submission.  Also review your submission prior to upload so that you may see if you can follow the program. Remember, teaching is moving as an instructor, not just reading off a paper. You may utilize the lesson plan but should only briefly review when necessary. A good program will be a flowing variety of exercises that everyone may easily understand and follow.  Please note we do not accept DropBox files, or other video streaming downloads due to virus, copyright and liability issues.

Practical Onsite Assessment with a Certified Master Trainer: involves the candidates preparing a 30 minute program. Organize a mutually beneficial time to show your practical assessment. Often there is a group. Each candidate will  be teaching other instructors who are attending the assessment date or (if alone) teaching the Master Trainer.
Onsite practical assessment should includes:
a) answering a couple of oral safety questions prior to teaching your program
b) Teaching  a 5-10 minute warm up (specific to the topic and safety)hing
c)  Teaching a 3-5 minute Cardiovascular Set Teaching
d)  Teaching two 3-5 minute Strength sets  (be sure to perform enough sets & reps) with or without equipment.) or a functional fitness set/segment.  If candidate decides to  utilize equipment, use of equipment must meet safety and efficacy guidelines.
e)  a 5-10 minute Cool Down/Warm Down which includes Stretching, relaxation and positive affirmations or closure to the program.

All candidates will have a formal report card and marking system (please check your manual) Candidates are evaluated based on
1) Understanding of the exercise objective.
2) If presentation is easy to see, hear and follow. Did the Instructor  monitor intensity and regulate intensity.
3) Was the program safe and effective,  and enjoyable. Was there both modifications and progressions.  ( see marking templates)

Exam Deadlines
All Exams are required to be completed within  6  months from training or sooner. Should you not have access to a computer we can mail an exam to submit.
Exams submitted after deadline, will be subject to a $35.00 late fee for each part of the exam (theory or practical). Please note that we do not accept exam submissions after 1 year from the training date. To fast track the examination process, we recommend that you order and review your course materials prior to the course. We do have video streaming if you are unable to view a DVD discs; however, you need to email us  this request. Sharing of exams and materials is strictly prohibited for both liability and copyright reasons.
The  Onsite Practical Assessment involves with Certified Master Trainer: teaching other instructors who attend the assessment session or the Master Trainer if this is an individual assessment. When there are several people in a group- the group acts as the class for the person being assessed (as they can learn from each others performances). The goal is to assess how each instructor completes the competencies required for the practical   (see below). Each Instructor planning on-site assessment must attend the pre-arranged group session or work with the MT at a convenient time & location, once you are scheduled to do so. If you cannot attend you MUST give 24 hours notice and re-schedule.  WaterART is Exercise with a Purpose - become Qualified & Competent!

Certification Report and Diploma: When all parts of the certification are completed (as specified above), report cards are written and emailed to you.
Once you are successful - you will receive an official WaterART Certified Diploma, Certified status and an online profile.
