Certification -FAQ

Do I need to become Certified before I start teaching?

Definitely – but become certified for the type of fitness you will be teaching.
For instance: if you are only interested in group instruction for healthy people then a general certification may be adequate.
If you plan to advance to teach in a specialized area such as for an Arthritis or Rehabilitation Program, or decide to offer personal training then you need to upgrade your certification for that specific area.  Never claim to be knowledgeable in an area of fitness for which you have not received certification.

How do I become Certified?

You must take a course either via onsite training or correspondence education ( or a combination of the two). You must purchase the materials individually and then complete both the theory and practical exam.

The theory exams involve short answers of applied study and writing out a lesson plan. The practical involves involves practical competencies. You have 3 options for completing the practical assessment for Certification. This should be submitted within 4-6 months of the training dates/or purchase of correspondence materials OR there is a $35.00 late fee. ( Include the fee with the exam). You must complete everything within a year - or you forfeit the training.

You have three choices to complete the practical assessment 1) attend a date that is scheduled with a Master Trainer-Please check website 2) submit a home video/DVD of your class (the class design is written out as part of the theory exam - we follow it along with your video/DVD submission) 3) book direct with a Master Trainer. In this scenario, the person being assessed has to make it convenient for the assessor (i.e. probably go to their location)
Each onsite assessment takes 20-30 minutes. It is not necessary for the Master Trainer to attend your whole program. You just have to complete the competencies.

Report cards are then written for both theory & practicals ( and we email the report card to you). Once you are successful - you will receive an official WaterART Certified Diploma, status and online profile recognition.

Practical Onsite Exam involves teaching other instructors who attend the assessment date or the Master Trainer. We usually have 3-5 people in a group.
You will have a couple of oral safety questions as well as teach
1) a 3-5 minute warm up Teaching
2) a 3-5 minute Cardio set Teaching
3) two 3-5 minute Strength sets and
4) a 3-5 minute Warm Down.
You are evaluated based on 1) do you understand the exercise objective 2) can we see, hear and understand you 3) is the exercise safe and effective, A full report card will be emailed or mailed to you after the exam to review.

How Do you Renew your Certification -You must renew every 2 years!

Note: If you have multiple certifications - all will expire the same date - so you need only renew it once every two years and all qualifiications will be renewed.
To renew - you must submit a renewal form ( unless you complete another level of certification) & your payment information.
If you have completed all WaterART hours - you may renew via phone. If you have other courses to submit - please mail the copy of certificate of course completion and the renewal form and payment to

MAIL IN CANADA : WaterART Fitness International 83 Galaxy Blvd, Unit 19, TORONTO, ON M9W 5X6
MAIL IN USA: WaterART Fitness International, Box 842 Lewiston, NY 14092

Fees are before the expiration = $35.00 ( + GST in Canada only)
After Expiration = $55.00 ( + GST in Canada only)
After 1 year of Expiration -no renewal possilbe. Candidates will need to complete the full course again either home study and/or onsite.  See full Certification Renewal details

All candidates will require a CURRENT lifeguarding qualification OR a valid CPR/FIRST AID - Emergency Safety skills - as the WaterART programs do not teach this and it is necessary to maintain a valid qualitification to maintain certification. This is typed right on the certfiication diploma - that it is up to the candidate to maintain this - as we can not keep checking.
WaterART has many home study or correspondence courses for CEC hours. All DVD's/Videos have a CEC quiz - so you may earn 2.0 / DVD. Let us know if you have other questions.

Please remember to
1) get a certicate of course completion from the WaterART Master Trainer OR if another organization - you will need to itemize -the hours, date, course content and instructor biography unless they are a WaterART Master Trainer. I page should be adequate. We will no longer accept their little cards for their training as not all instructors do the same length of training)

2) if WaterART is not familiar with the course - content -then the candidate must submit an hour by hour breakdown with course objectives ( usually a page or two) 3) Please note instructors must submit the proper paperwork for renewal forms. Everyone is responsible for having EITHER Lifeguarding qualifications or CRP/FIRST Aid qualifiications - in addition to the 16 hours.

Are all Certifications equal ?

You should always do your own research when investing in education. We want you to check out our competition so that you are fully aware of the benefits of WaterART & the uniqueness of WaterART Fitness. The Aquatics & Fitness industry is a relatively new area for research and development in the fitness and/or aquatics industry. Although Aquatic Fitness has been taught for over 45 years in North America, few of the initial pioneers had exercise science training. Programs were largely based on land programs performed at land speeds dropped in the water.

Literally hundreds of certifications are available throughout North America. Each certifying organization has different standards and its own method for testing a candidate’s knowledge.
As a result the consumer may be confused when choosing a certification that will have an impact on their career. In order to make an educated decision check that a certification body has:

  • A standardized method of training
  • Provides both a theoretical and practical assessment
  • Provides ongoing education and re-certification process
  • Utilizes methodology that has been research based
  • Offers national or international recognition
  • Has an Advisory Board or organizational structure
  • Utilizes current techniques and resources
  • Is relevant to your needs (to be qualified as an aquatic fitness personal trainer, then must take specific training)
  • Offers liability coverage programs
  • Affordable
  • Offers continuing education through training or correspondence
  • A certification exam that is separate from the training (some offer certification and training on the same day)

If I have more than one WaterART certification do I have to renew each one separately?
No -You need only renew the HIGHEST level of certification. If you have lesser certifications these are automatically renewed for the same time period. If you advance to an even higher level of certification - your renewal date will automatically become 2 years from the date of that certification.

What is the difference between a WaterART Professional Membership and WaterART Certification?

Membership may be obtained by any individual that is interested in the benefits of health and wellness through Fitness. The goal of WaterART is to provide the member access to more resources and ideas to help generate a more productive and profitable status.

All levels of membership are optional, however, members receive benefits including a special WP member rate at all WaterART events, discounts on educational resources and products, job postings/listings on our web site and more.

Certification is granted when a candidate has completed both a theory & practical exam to demonstrate competency in skills and an understanding of the materials as presented in our training tracks. Only candidates that have completed either a home study correspondence training program or an onsite program may become certified.

Simply stated

Membership is Benefits and everyone is welcome!
Certification is Qualifications. You must complete the compentency exams to become Certified ( and qualified!).
