Aquatic Seniors Instructor Certification

The goal of this program is to provide instructors, personal trainers, health care providers with comprehensive yet practical approach of facilitating an aging population with a variety of common medical conditions. Each day will involve both a theory (lecture session) and practical pool session.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Aquatic exercise and its application for people with common medical conditions.

  • How training in water, may improve function on land for people with age related functional issues.

  • How current research and how it applies to water training methodology.

  • The properties of water and how it will effect program design for the aging population.

  • Programming for a variety of pools and environmental considerations including warm and cool water pools.

  • Screening and safety considerations for the aging population and medical conditions.

  • Progressions and modifications for functional exercise design.

  • We will review the methods of monitoring and regulating exercise intensity to keep clients safe.

  • How to evaluate exercises for safety and effectiveness

  • Components of an aquatic fitness class and target design for cardiovascular training, flexibility and muscular fitness training as well as functional training.

  • Structure of a basic class design suitable for aging populations

  • Thermal regulation principles and guidelines

  • Guidelines and when to refer back to a health care provider when programming  populations such as: functional and age related problems, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary diseases, early stages of Parkinson's Disease and movement disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Common forms of Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, as well as common orthopedic conditions of the back, hips, knees, shoulders, neck and ankles

  • How to  assess functional  fitness and program with specific water specific exercise inventory.

  • Functional range of motion for each joint action.

  • Coaching and teaching tips for each medical condition.

  • Research has clearly documented how previously sedentary individuals may train in the water and significantly improve their performance on land.

  • The goal of this program is to provide instructors/personal trainers/health providers with comprehensive technical and practical applications on how to facilitate a clientele with chronic conditions and/or special needs and help them improve their activities of daily living (ADL's).

  • Aquatic programming in terms of basic skills, safety tips and modifications for the aging population and medical conditions will be covered in this thorough program.
