No experience necessary! The shallow water program provides candidates with a system for designing general population total body group exercise classes. Instructors will learn exercise science and programming for the many skill and fitness levels that attend classes (swimmers and non swimmers). Whether you are a new Instructor or just needing an upgrade – this program has been innovated to help Instructors teach more practically. Water exercise equipment such as pool noodles, fitness mitts and dumbbells may be introduced. This is an excellent option for the non swimmer instructor because of the many tools that will be learned and practiced to build your comfort zone with water exercise -the wave of the future! New aquatic fitness instructors may start with this level especially if you only have shallow water depth in your pool. Instructors who are re-qualifying may want to review this program as an easy option for re-certifying their existing qualifications with WaterART Fitness.

This Aquatic Rehabilitation for General Populations is designed to give a comprehensive overview of exercises suitable for a general population recovering from injury, replacement surgery, and other debilitating conditions that prevent them from enjoying full mobility with daily living. In other words, this program is for less fit population as compared to WaterART’s Aquatic Rehabilitation Athletic Populations.

The learning objective is to understand anatomy, safe joint range, muscle action and overall fitness levels requirements to be able to design and oversee safe exercise programs that will help each person return, as close as possible to, or improve upon, their previous levels of mobility.

The goal is to provide overall mobility for recovery and function for activities of daily living. Therefore the regions of focus will cover suggested exercises for : the Cervical Thoracic and Lumbar areas of the spine, and the shoulder, hip , knee and ankle joint areas. Other exercises include suggestions for clients requiring CVA or post stroke rehab which can also be used for most movement disorders. These exercises will provide the Instructor with a generic base of safe, adaptable movement that can be combined to create programs suitable to each client’s personal needs. Some people with a chronic condition may never advance beyond a certain stage for recovery however this does not mean they have not improved their quality of life. We train to work on the ability not disability.

Video Programs

Intro To Post Rehabilitation Instructor – V091 part 1 (30 minutes)

This Tutorial video follows a power point presentation to introduce the Instructor to the many aspects of Post Rehabilitation in the water. Topics include the wide variety of conditions that can be helped in the water. The need to work on mobility and function to bring each client back as close as possible to former strengths. Suggestions for safe water entry and many practical comments to train water skills will help the instructor create an effective program suited to each client’s ability. This program will review an essential checklist for programming people with many functional limitations who are new to water exercise.

Intro To Anatomy V091 part 2 (66 minutes)

Having a good general knowledge of all joint and muscle action is an essential part of Post Rehabilitation programming. This Tutorial DVD power point presentation guided by Leigh de Groot Registered Physiotherapist ( RPT) gives professionals a complete overview of all joint biomechanics and the muscle action required to move through a safe range of motion. Each major muscle group is examined in detail for location, strengths and weaknesses. A wide variety of exercises are shown to assist instructors to chose safe movement for the condition being rehabbed in the water.

Beginner Mobility Program V091 part 3 (56 minutes)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Follow WaterART Master Trainers Jane Pomponio and Julie Twynham as they take you through an inventory of movement essential to safe water programming for post rehabilitation clients who are new to water, new to exercise or both. All exercise movements are shown above and underwater with subtitles and detailed commentary for effective video training reference.

Shallow Water Exercises for those New to Exercise V091 part 4 (68 minutes)

Learn how to work one on one with a post rehabilitation client in shallow water. This video program illustrates how to get the client into the water safely and comfortably. Once in, the instructor and client work through an inventory of essential movement to train for function on land. This inventory includes safe and effective warm up movement, specific strengthening and stretching exercises and ideas for modifications for the wide variety of conditions that clients bring to the water.

Unloaded Water Exercises for those New to Exercise V091 part 5 (59 minutes)

This DVD is designed to help clients who need to begin their post rehabilitation without any loaded stress on their joints. The client is fitted with a belt to keep the feet off the pool floor. All movement can be done suspended in shallow water or taken to the deep end if the client has developed safe water skills. Exercises cover all components of fitness and show how to train the client to handle buoyancy, using instructor assistance at first, then, working solo as they feel comfortable. The client can be trained to use the resistance of water to assist travel as well as increasing resistance to add strengthening progressions as their condition improves. The goal is to provide balanced exercise that will provide benefits for their safe return to land.

Equipment Toolbox V091 part 6 (23 minutes)

There is a wide variety of equipment available for pool use, some floats while others sink. Which will be safe and effective to help your client? Take a look at the differences between buoyant and resistive equipment and the requirements for the many general post rehabilitation conditions that may come to your pool. Each exercise must be specific to the condition and be both safe and effective. See suggestions for targeting the same exercise with different pieces of equipment to help with choice.

WaterART offers 3 styles of Videos for your educational needs:

a ) What is a Workout Video is a start to finish follow- a- long program. Learn a template for total body benefits from start to finish. A great way to learn flow and fast track your lesson plan.

b)What is a Tutorial Video – A tutorial is a video-guided PowerPoint presentation with a Certified WaterART Master Trainer which reviews all the classroom sessions and information that instructors would typically receive if attending an on-site training event. Video tutorials are an excellent investment as they can be reviewed several times, especially if the information is new and somewhat overwhelming. We highly recommend our guided tutorials to those who are not familiar with exercise science.

c) Educational Videos offer a multitude of exercise inventory and ideas. Often in a program you can’t teach or train every exercise and variety and progress are the cornerstones of efficacy.

Our most popular and group exercise foundation program explores shallow and deep water depths. The program will provide candidates with a template for blending exercise science with the properties of water. Learn to create a safe, balanced and total body aquafit program. Our fitness leadership journey takes participants through both theory and practical testing/certification. Candidates do not have to be a lifeguard or have any experience to join this the program. Candidates will have up to six months to complete the certification after the training.

All instructors will need to adhere to their health & safety guidelines in their district or at their facility. Whether you call this aqua aerobics, water-fit, water exercise, H2O Fitness – we welcome anyone interested in leading and teaching vertical water fitness to enroll in this course!

This enhanced program comes with tutorials (guided power point presentation by a WaterART Master Trainer), educational and follow a long workouts. Shallow water depth is waist to chest depth with feet on the pool bottom. Deep water depths are typically 4 feet or greater and participants use either buoyancy belt or noodle to assist their body position without touching the pool bottom.

WaterART highly recommends this foundation program (or Shallow H2O Instructor Certification if only teaching shallow depth) prior to any other Water Fitness course or training program so that you learn how to create safe, effective and enjoyable lesson plans.
