This session explores both shallow and deep water training, focusing on effective class design, essential safety guidelines, and program development techniques. Participants will learn how to adapt exercises for each depth to maximize safety, functionality, and fitness benefits. Instructors will gain strategies for introducing new movements in ways that suit the unique properties of shallow and deep water—recognizing that exercises may need to be modified or completely reimagined depending on depth.

By selecting movements appropriate to the water’s depth, instructors can help participants improve posture, balance, and purposeful movement patterns. The session also covers the role of music, the value of structured lesson plans, and the power of clear visual and verbal communication. Attendees will explore methods for building strength, enhancing flexibility, and boosting cardiovascular fitness, all while maintaining variety and engagement.

Finally, we address the challenges—and rewards—of teaching groups with diverse fitness levels, skills, and personalities, and how to create a motivating environment for everyone..

Explore the vital aspects of Arthritis exercise, focusing on stretching and mobility techniques. This workshop engaged participation & questions from delegates. There is a live class with music which helps to enhance motivation and movement. Arthritis programs aim for pain-free movement, and equipment is tailored to individual needs (not one size fits all). Ideally this program emphasizes mobility in daily activities- off the wall for optimal balance and posture training. Water exercises provides protection from joint stress while adding multi-dimensional resistance. Communication to have everyone move at their own pace (no jumping, no fast movement, no advanced resistance or range of motion) for safety -since if they want to workout more intensely -they may choose to take another style of class. Participants engage in warm-ups, cardio, and cool-downs, ensuring a comprehensive workout experience.

Working with buoyant resistance is much more challenging than this may look. Realize water is buoyant, then there is a buoyant piece of resistance and then the client may have more built in buoyancy or body fat to create a very challenging environment for both safety and efficacy. Review some exercises that are best suited to those who do want challenge and strength work and do not have any shoulder or neck issues. WaterART recommends that people with neck and shoulder problems carefully choose their upper body strength exercises not to aggravate that area. When in doubt start with one exercise then progress to adding more exercises -that way you may feel if the exercise benefits.

This video will provide the how to plan a lesson plan for everyone –and one size does not fit all . When planning a class you have to choose and teach moves that can be adjusted to suit each individual in their preferred water depth – realizing all depths may work!

Depending upon the pool, you can choose between shallow, transitional or deep-water depths and a combination of all. Although it is preferable to keep everyone in the same class in the same depth of water this is not always possible, therefore you must be aware of the similarities and differences found at each depth and train your clients accordingly. It is possible to teach the same biomechanical moves to all clients but they must be trained to use the water safely, maintain good body alignment and perform each movement correctly. Teach the moves suitable for the class advertised, and demonstrate the different levels of intensity and/or modifications that can be used for each water depth. Always allow your participants to choose their own level and to “work-out at their own pace”. Always remember that an instructor is responsible for everyone in the pool they teach – so making sure that the move is appropriate to the water depth. In other words you cannot jump in the deep water and all suspended movements in shallow (without buoyancy equipment) are advanced. Keep peopel moving an avoid letting people simply to hang out or chat or disrupt your classes.
